Donny is nine years old and attends CC Elementary School. He appears tired in class and looks often distracted. Donny is not doing well in school. He forgets to complete his homework and shows low motivation to improve his grades. Donny is a loner and does not interact with kids during recess. Mrs. Jones, the teacher, thinks Donny is depressed. When Mrs. Jones asked what was wrong, Donny told her that his family lost his home during a hurricane and could not sleep at night. He also said his parents lost all belongings, and they struggled to eat dinner sometimes. Donny said he could not focus, and he was hungry and tired.

 1) In applying Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, what level of needs are not being met in Donny’s case? Explain. Show evidence to support your response – articles, textbook, etc.

2) What is the root cause of Donny’s lack of motivation and poor performance in school? (Apply Maslow’s theory). Show evidence to support your response – articles, textbook, etc.

3) Show how can you apply for free breakfast and lunch programs in schools relating to Maslow’s theory of basic needs? Why is this important in school performance?
