Consider the following question: Candemocracy thrive in the 21^st century?

The question is intentionally quite broad.This is meant to allow you a great degree of flexibility in developing yourresearch-based 

paper. With this in mind, here are the basic but essential requirementsfor your comprehensive exam/paper in global politics.

First, develop a thesis clearly based onthe opening question. Your thesis must address questions of continueddemocratic 

expansion and democratic sustainability. At the sametime, you may primarily focus on one or the other.

Second, develop or apply a coherentanalytical or theoretical framework that supports your thesis. You may drawfrom theoretical 

approaches in comparative politics and/or internationalrelations (IR).

Third, support your thesis with anappropriate method and (empirical) evidence. Evidence must be drawn fromreal-world cases. 

You are free to adopt a primarily qualitative or quantitativeapproach or a mixture of both.

Other requirements

1.     The paper must be formatted asa peer-reviewed journal article. Include a 150-200 word abstract.

2.    Suggested length: 6,000 to 9,000 words.

3.    Your paper must correctly use astandard citation system for both notes and your bibliography (author-datecitations are 

permissible).
