Karl Marx famously interpreted history as a drama of class struggle—oppressor and oppressed.
The modern form of this struggle is that which takes place between the bourgeoisie and the
proletariat. Late modern thinkers and writers perform endless substitutes for these two
characters, but what remains constant is their irreconcilable conflict.
In the years following Marx, philosophers and sociologists combined Marx’s economic drama
with Freud’s sexual drama. The task of dispossessing the bourgeois (oppressor) class has been
identified with the task of replacing the reality principle with the pleasure principle by refusing
to sublimate the father, but by “castrating” the father instead.
For Essay Four, use Marx and Freud’s models of class conflict and Oedipal conflict to offer
an interpretation of an issue, event, person, or cultural production.
How do these models help (or fail to help) you to understand the meaning of your subject?
Make sure your subject is specific. Focus on its details. Use your details as evidence to support
your thesis.
Also be sure to make relevant and thoughtful use of The Communist Manifesto and The Ego and
the Id. In addition, plan on using at least one additional textual source to support your
interpretation. Be sure to cite and document your sources according to the MLA style.
