This assignment is a 3-page essay building off your essay outline worksheet. Your essay should focus on one key scene in the novel, from which you deduce an important theme and idea conveyed by the novel. You will then connect this idea/theme to 2-3 other passages in the book. You will use summary and direct quotation from these passages to show how the idea/theme emerges from, unfolds, and develops in the book.

Good start to your essay. I would like to see your one-sentence summary of the theme become a little more specific. What do you mean by marginalization? Can you give examples? Is marginalization a strong enough word to describe the "battle royale" scene that you quote for your key passage? This is a scene of brutalization and torture. For your three supporting passages, I would like to see scenes drawn from later sections of the book. Especially given that the theme you’ve articulated is so general, there’s no reason that all your examples should be clustered so closely together. Alternatively, if you were to articulate a theme that is highly specific to one section in the book, then it would make more sense to draw supporting passages from nearby, within the same section
