Begin by finding ONE scholarly book and ONE journal article, relating to your topic, through the ATU Library website. The book and article may be in print form in the library, in full text online, or in print form through interlibrary loan. I will be providing more information on what sources are acceptable and how to acquire them in a future class session. You may not choose any of the assigned class readings for this assignment. I attached my topic proposal which is what the essay report must be about. Specifically focus on Frida Kahlo, Octavio Paz and Surrealism This assignment will be at least 2 FULL pages (double-spaced, in 12-point type, one-inch margins), in two sections of at least one full page each, one section on the book and one section on the journal article. At the beginning of each section, provide a citation for the source in some accepted scholarly format (I will make information about scholarly citation formats available at a future date). Then, write a critical review of the book/article by summarizing the important points especially the thesis, or the authors main argument and evaluating the quality of the book/article as a piece of scholarship. Questions you may want to consider include, but are not limited to: Does the author prove his/her thesis? If so, what pieces of evidence are especially convincing? If not, what is lacking that would have made the book/article more effective? How is the book/article organized, and does that make a difference in how effective it is? What about the authors writing style; does that make it more or less convincing? About this last question, do not write, This book/article was too hard to read because it used a lot of big words. If you have trouble understanding the book/article, its best to find another one. The idea is to be objective. The goal of this essay is not to express your taste (i.e., I liked the book or I didnt like the book); it is to explain the effectiveness of the book and article as sources of information for an educated person who is undertaking scholarly study of a topic.
