Between 2000 and 2010, the percentage of public schools requiring that students wear uniforms increased from 12 to 19 percent with 10 percent of high schools requiring uniforms, 19 percent of middle schools, and 22 percent of primary schools (Robers, Kemp, & Truman, 2013). School uniform policies usually “apply to students in grades K–8 and may be either voluntary or mandatory with opt-out provisions for exemptions based on philosophical or religious objections or medical reasons” (LaMorte, 2012, p. 143). Courts have upheld mandatory school uniform policies.
