You most likely began this module with some familiarity with ancient Egypt – maybe about mummies or the pyramids of King Tut’s gold sarcophagus. In this discussion thread please share what you came into this module knowing, and what struck you the most from what you learned. Be specific, add at least one labeled image in your response. Please review the video “Nubia, Egypt, and the Concept of Race,” and have a look at the Met’s essay “The Land of Nubia” (especially the beginning and the map). In this module, we’ve looked at Egyptian art as a unique culture, but increasingly scholars have started to think about Nubia in the context of Egypt. Based on the video and essay, what are some of the challenges with studying Egypt as its own unique culture, or as part of its greater African context? Or is the ancient context the Nile, from the Mediterranean in the North to the Sudan desert to the south?

I’m looking for your opinion based on what you’ve read and seen in this module. If you’ve come across this question in another class please tell me. We’ll come back to how modern, colonial, and post-colonial perspectives influence how we study the art and culture of Africa again at the end of this course (module 12). Let’s see if your thinking evolves between now and then!
