1.The planning regime in Ontario is described as policy-led and statute-based. Discuss this in terms of the four key regional plans that we looked at that form the foundation of environmental planning on a regional scale. In your answer you should name the four plans and their respective statutes; how they work together to provide planning policy direction for the Greater Golden Horseshoe; and, how they are implemented at the local level.
2.Describe the details of the impact Hurricane Hazel had on Toronto. Why is it considered one of the most significant environmental events in Torontos history? What occurred after Hurricane Hazel that was of significance to the history of environmental planning in the Toronto region? What are the important legacies left by this natural disaster?
3.The work of advocates is often based on passion, commitment and courage to push governments in the direction of addressing environmental issues that that are of great concern to them. The influence of the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) provides a very good example of an advocacy group directly influencing the development of municipal and provincial environmental policy. Discuss how FLAP has influenced and continues to influence the development of the City of Torontos bird protection policies. In your discussion you should include key points along this continuum of policy development such as (but not limited to) the formation of FLAP, the 2005 notice of motion, the 2007 Bird-Friendly Development Guidelines, the evolution of the Toronto Green Standard, the 2013 Ontario Superior Court ruling, and the recent initiative by the Province of Ontario and the Canadian Standards Association to develop a national standard for bird- friendly buildings.
