The essay part needs to be at least 500 words. But the article also needs to be annotated. I have the questions for them to use to annote to make it easier

For this assignment, you will annotate in Perusall an opinion essay, focusing on the argument’s strengths and weaknesses according to Rules 1 – 11 that you’ve learned during this first half of the semester. Your aim is to dig deeply into the author’s use of logic and evidence (appeals to logos) as well as the author’s use of emotional appeals, including tone and word choice, and the author’s appeals to ethos (where the author tries to let us know why we should trust him or her, usually based on the author’s expertise, experience, background, etc.). Your goal is to determine, based on Rules 1 – 11, just how strong this argument is. It doesn’t matter whether or not you agree with the author’s claims; you need to determine if it’s a good argument–a fair but also well-supported and persuasive one.

You will write up your findings in a 500+-word evaluation

What can you identify about the rhetorical situation? Who is the author and what is her background? What occasion has prompted her to write? Can you identify words and phrases that indicate this writing as a blog post rather than an essay published in a magazine or newspaper? How can you tell the difference?

After you annotate your article, you should begin planning and drafting your short evaluation of the article. I recommend starting with a list of the 11 rules and under each rule, note an example you found in the argument. How well does that example show the author using that rule? Has the author done a solid job with it, or has the author "broken the rule"? In your evaluation writing, you need to be able to explain what the rule is, what it means (why it’s important, in other words), and how the example(s) you found in your chosen argument illustrate a good or weak use of that rule, and why.

Tip: Be sure to note quotable phrases, in case you want to include them in your evaluation, as well as all passages that you think illustrate strengths or weaknesses in the argument, and which you would paraphrase or summarize in your own evaluation, to give examples of the argument’s strengths and weaknesses. These annotations are the material you will work with and incorporate into coherent paragraphs in your written evaluation.
