Please read Chapter 5 of your textbook (actually written by Virginia Danielson, who was instrumental in the making of the film) before watching the documentary film Umm Kulthum: A Voice Like Egypt. Then share your reflections on the film in a 3-5 paragraph response. Using specific examples from the film, discuss the relationship between popular music, the mass media, and the political history of Egypt. What scenes did you find the most powerful? What were the strengths and weaknesses of this film as a document about the role of popular music in human life? How did the topic of the film relate to the discussions we have been having in this unit? Due by 5 PM on Tuesday, February 22.
The Berry Library owns a copy of the DVD for this film, and in the past I would put the DVD on reserve and ask students to watch it in the library. Since that’s not possible this year, I ask that you either watch it on Amazon Prime with a free trial of Fandor (here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B01M2WGP8B/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_r) or, if you must, watch this unlicensed copy of the film on YouTube:
