The first item in the reading assignment, Poetic Language, will help you understand how the poets use language to awaken the thoughts and emotions of the reader. Understanding poetic language will help you appreciate the art of the poet. Look for examples of poetic language as you read these poems.
Ask yourself as you read: Which poems evoke my memories, thoughts, and/or feelings about life I have observed or my life in Florida?
Poetic Language
Study these terms and be sure you can explain how the author uses one or more of them in a poem: alliteration, assonance, consonance, rhyme, metaphor, simile, personification, and irony. The site below defines these terms:
Poetic (Figurative) Language
Essay in MLA style. Cite the poems that you use.
You may include visuals with the essay if you wish.
Word Count: 500 – 550 words (Be sure to observe the word count.)
Assignment
Choose one of the assigned poems for Project 2 that affects you in some way.
Explain how that poem affects you and how the language and poetic language in the poem creates that effect.
NOTE: The focus of this essay is your personal reaction to the poem. Be sure that is the focus of each paragraph. When you explain the effect the poem has on you, be
sure to explain how the specific elements in the poem create that effect on you. It is fine to use I in the essay when you talk about your personal reaction.
Write a short, well-organized essay:
In the introduction, write the title of the poem and the author. Also, summarize the effect the poem has on you.
In the body of the essay, discuss specific lines and/or words in the poem which create this effect on you. Use specific details, scenes, or situations to explain the effect the poem has on you.
Write a concluding paragraph for the essay.
Help with selecting a topic:
The following questions are provided to help you think about the poem. They are only suggestions and examples of some ways to look at a poem. Your experience with the
poem may be different from any of these.
Does the poem remind you of a place, situation or person?
Does the poem cause you to experience thoughts or emotions?
Does it remind you of a story from your life?
Does it remind you of something or someone you have observed?
Observe these rules when writing about poetry:
It is fine to use some short quotations, but limit quotations to about 10-15% of your paper.
Try to use 1-3 lines from the poem to make your point, not a whole stanza.
Hint for Success: Introduce all quotations. For example, do not begin a paragraph with a quotation.
