As you know, there will be no lectures this week. Instead, you are required to watch a film about The Weather Underground, which will nicely reinforce several topics we covered so far in this class (the Vietnam War, of course, but also the 1968 phenomenon, the power of various social movements, as well as many more.)
Instructions:
Unfortunately, the film “Weather Underground” (2002, by Sam Green and Bill Siegel) is not available for streaming through WSU. However, it is easily accessible for streaming on YouTube for free –
The Weather Underground (through You Tube) (Links to an external site.)
– or for a small fee ($3.99) through amazon prime. If you are not enrolled in amazon prime make sure to check out this link about prime student membership available for all WSU students:
The Weather Underground (through Amazon Prime) (Links to an external site.)
After watching the film, please submit your answers to the questions below. Your answers must be based on the film and should be at least 400 words long.
Questions:
1. According to the documentary, what were the members of the Weather Underground trying to achieve, i.e., what were their goals?
2. As shown in the film, most of the members of the Weather Underground started with non-violent methods of protest. When and why did they change their mind and started using violence in order to achieve their goals?
3. How does the movie account for the failure of the Weather Underground to achieve their ultimate goals?
