STAGECOACH – Genre Conventions Exercise
Genre conventions in Chapter 3 (page 85) and in the video on The Western.  Genre conventions are aspects of films within a genre that most movies in that genre have in common.
Your assignment is to watch John Ford’s “Stagecoach”, then write a two page synopsis on the six genre conventions discussed.  Write about how the movie fits, or doesn’t fit with the genre conventions for westerns.
Use the following settings for your paper:
Use an easy-to-read font like Arial or Times New Roman
                    Use font size 12
Paragraph settings should include line spacing of 1.5   (not double or single spaced)
The six genre conventions you’ll need to write about are:
Story Formulas       Character Type        Theme          Presentation          Setting         Stars
Discuss any similarities or differences between “Stagecoach” and other movies in the western genre with regard to each of the genre conventions.  Does “Stagecoach” have aspects in common with other westerns or with the western genre as a whole?
The easy way to complete this assignment is to write a paragraph on each of the six genre conventions.  Make sure to study the pages in the book as they will help you.  The video we watched about The Western will also help.
For the best grade, spend some time on this, write a minimum of two pages, and don’t write a bunch of fluff about when the movie was made, who the director was, what the movie was about, etc.  The assignment is TWO PAGES, any less will be reflected in your grade, and do not attempt to stretch to two pages by increasing line spacing, font size, adding blank lines, etc.
