Western Thought Discussions

Each question and answer should remain separated by its number. Please do not respond to each question and put it into one large paper.

 

1.     Western thought, beginning about 400 B.C., understood our kind of being, human being, to be essentially the language (Greek, logos) kind of being. Is there a better way to describe the essence or central characteristic of the human being? Give two reasons why language (logos) is or is not the best way to identify the essence of being human. 

 

2.     What do Christ and His church have to do with philosophy, if anything?  First, be sure to follow the First Act of the Mind by identifying and defining the pivotal terms in the question. Second, do your best to use a quote from Christ and His Word and an actual quote from a philosopher in order to discuss this question thoughtfully.

Suppose that a friend says to you, As a religious person I know that abortion is murder, but personally I support a womans right to make her own choice on whether or not to have an abortion. How would you respond to her moral relativism? Why respond at all?

Then answer the following prompts:

The thread that ties us with Aristotle and leads into the Stoics and Epicureans is happiness as the reason for philosophy and ethics. 

What sort of happiness makes our own ethics or moral living worth doing? Are you living a happy life right now?  Why or why not?
