• Select a sociological concept from the following list: abuse, domestic violence, or mental health. [Research Project: You will have to discus how you conceptualized your main variables and how you measured them]
• Challenge yourself to conceptualize (define for the purpose of a study) the social construct (chosen concept) without first consulting prior literature. Brainstorm about the different dimensions or aspects of the concept. For example, if you chose financial status, you can define it as the level of income.
• After you gave it some thought, consult prior works to see how your concept has been defined by other social science researchers.
• How and where does your conceptualization (Links to an external site.) differ from others’?
• Are there dimensions of the concept that you or others hadnt considered?
• What indicators can we use the measure the concept? Ex. gender can be operationalized by using the binary male/female or as a researcher you may choose to open it up to a number of options, like cisgender male, cisgender female, non-conforming, two spirit, etc.
