Reflection
Throughout this course, you have learned that culture is everywhere. You find culture in various settings. Whether that is within your organizations, schools, or communities, it is difficult to escape the notion of culture. Even within the various cultural settings, you find subsections of culture. For example, organizations have various departmental cultures. And within these departments, each department has its own culture. And even within that culture, you may find a culture that is political in nature. It is difficult to escape culture in your world. How organizations view culture is very important. With a clearer understanding of culture, you find that organizations tend to function better when they have a better understanding of culture. This creates synergies that render them more flexible, adaptive, and resilient to a diverse workforce.
Cultural issues within a cultural setting arise when there are differences in perceptions. This conflict can undoubtedly bring about friction between the two parties. However, you have learned in this course that both parties should seek to understand their own cultural differences. Doing this reduces the friction that comes with the various views or perceptions that each culture holds.
As you reflect this week, think about your own cultural perceptions and norms. How do these perceptions and or norms impact the way you work with others? Also, think about ways you can seek to understand the cultural perceptions and norms of those around you.
