RCA Checklist

Group Assignment 1 (See Rubric C) will appraise the qualitative article in using the Qualitative RCA Evaluation Checklist (Melnyk & Finout-Overholt, 2015). Each group will use the RCA Evaluation Checklist to answer three broad issues when appraising qualitative research evidence. You must clearly answer each question by highlighting either yes, no, or unknown, listed in the checklist and provide a summary for each of the three broad issues with supporting information or rationales about your answers.

The three broad issues need to be considered when appraising the report of a qualitative research:

  • Are the results of the review valid? (4 sub-questions/items)
  • What are the results? (3 sub-questions/items)
  • Will the results help me in caring my patients? (3 sub-questions)

While appraising qualitative research evidence, the sub-question items under each broad issue in the checklist are provided as the specific criteria for you to think through, make appropriate judgments on, and determine whether the evidence is valid. These sub-items will help you in generating your answers with rationales for this assignment. You are free to reference other appraisal tools (e.g. CASP, critical appraisal criteria in the text etc.) when doing this assignment; but it is not required.

** Note.  (1) Appropriately citing research methods/ findings and authors’ point views using APA are expected; (2) NO direct quotes from the article are allowed; (3) Make sure to cite the article in Appendix C using the original source directly from the journal, not the textbook; and (4) Use the RCA template and highlight the answer to each question and provide support for the choice with text on the RCA checklist. No title page is required. Reference the article and text-book correctly at the end of the cheklist. Keep the submission 5 pages or less. Please indicate which student answered which question.
