Medical professionals often use resources to help their patients and families understand medical terminology and to cope with a diagnosis.  The key to using resources effectively is matching the individual’s needs, level of understanding, style of learning, and interests to an appropriate and reliable resource they can relate to and understand.

  1. Find a resource (book, website, toy, game, etc– feel free to be creative) that you would use to help an individual understand one of the diagnoses covered in this weeks chapter (include the diagnosis in your post).  You may choose a resource you would use with a patient/ family (ex: a toy or game) or one that the patient/ family would you on their own time (ex: website).
    • If you choose a website with many pages or sections, please identify one or two specific pages and link them.

  2. What ages or developmental stage would find this resource helpful?  Please be as specific as possible (do not just say "child"- a 3 year old is very different from a 7 year old).  Feel free to choose adults, but also include a specific age range (is it more suited for a 25 year old or 75 year old?).  You can also choose a resource for a parent of a child- but be sure to identify the child’s age (parenting teens is different than parenting an infant).
  3. Would you use this resource with the patient as part of your treatment/ session or would the resource be better suited to them using it on their own time?

  4. What do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of the resource?
  5. Be sure to include a link to the resource and detailed information about it (publication information, manufacturer, etc).

Please do not use a wikipedia site or medical dictionary as a resource.  The resource should engage the user and provide more than a basic definition.
