Listening Paper

Have a conversation with and listen carefully to 3 other people, at different times. After each listening time, jot down some notes. (Or if the folks agree, you can record the conversations so you can refer to that information again later when writing.)

Use the information you have gleaned and the information in Chapter 6 on Listening and Responding Effectively to analyse your own listening approach.  Consider these questions:

  • What compotents of the listening process come easily to you? Are these any you might want to improve?
  • How much are you an “active listener”? Did you paraphrase or clarify what you heard?
  • What did you see as your primary listening purpose? How did that impact the information you gained?
  • What listening style(s) are most natural for you?

(Choose 1-2 questions that are most interesting–– or offer the greatest insights–– for you.)

Write a short 2-3 page paper (double spaced) about the listening encounter you had.

  1. a) Describe your listening and conversations briefly
  2. b) Use information from the questions, the text, and other sources (if needed) to analyze your listening.
  3. c) Detail what you learned through this assignment and what that might mean for you in the future.

Note: Be sure to use evidence (examples, descriptions, quotes, statistics, stories, pictures, etc.) to support your key ideas in this brief paper.

ANY source, including the textbook, will need APA Style in your writing and in a Works Cited list at the end.  (Use the Library LInks about APA style on Canvas.)
