Instructions
This assignment will include two essays. Choose two of the following:
- What is a fragile state? What areas of fragility should the international community address and why? Provide current and historic examples.
- What is human security? When did this idea become popular and what does it mean for US national security decisions? Should we pay any attention to this? Provide current examples.
- Assess the difference between terrorism and crime. Are cyber threats a crime or a terror attack? Provide current and historic examples.
- What is the most pressing emerging need for US national security? Does this need differ from what the international community needs to prioritize? Why or why not? Provide current examples.
- What is human trafficking, and why is it so hard to stop?
- Assess the likelihood of international cooperation on global health security. Define your terms and use theories of cooperation to help explain current examples of cooperation (or lack thereof) on a recent health issue, like COVID-19, Ebola, AIDS, or SARS (to name a few).
- Is climate change a national security issue? Does the answer differ depending on what state in which you live? Would the US response differ from the Australian response (for example)? Why or why not?
- Are drug cartels terrorist groups? Why or why not? Provide examples.
- What are global public goods, and why is it hard to cooperate to find solutions to them? Is there a global commons? Is it in danger? Provide current examples.
Technical Requirements
- Your paper must be at a minimum of 4-5 pages per question for a total of 8-10 pages (the Title and Reference pages do not count towards the minimum limit).
- Scholarly and credible references should be used. A good rule of thumb is at least 2 scholarly sources per page of content.
- Type in Times New Roman, 12 point and double space.
- Students will follow the current Turabian Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework.
- Points will be deducted for the use of Wikipedia or encyclopedic type sources. It is highly advised to utilize books, peer-reviewed journals, articles, archived documents, etc.
- All submissions will be graded using the assignment rubric.
