Utilizing your own and the peer-precis, required semester readings, and annotated bibliography, write a case study and analysis of an organization in light of the history and theory of organizational science. Be specific, consider your research question, utilize the literature, and allow the following questions to guide your integrative case essay:
Case:
- Organizational Identity: What is central to your organization (mission, values, beliefs)?
- Culture: What are the internal and external pressures of the organization that cause conflict, tension, or malaise?
- Design: What is the organizational culture (Schein) and how is the organizational culture [internal integration and external adaptation] manifested in its design?
- Organizational Experience: What is it like for an executive, employee, client, or customer to experience the organization on a daily basis?
Analysis:
- Theory: What theories help to explain and examine the organizational culture and design? What theories challenge the manner in which the organization is designed and operates?
- Alignment: How is the current structure in alignment or discord with the culture of the organization? What ongoing questions or adjustments, in light of organization theory, are necessary to consider for the flourishing of the organization?
The final essay for this seminar is designed to assist the student in developing a sustained and well-researched essay. Careful attention is given to:
- presenting a clear statement of your argument;
- properly documenting sources;
- sustaining a descriptive yet analytical and creative perspective; and
- attending to format, grammar, spelling, and mechanics, including footnotes. (Students have permission to choose either APA or Turabian style depending on their concentration, whether business or ministry).
Writing is the central skill for students at the PhD level. One must be able to develop and sustain an argument that is coherent, critical/analytical, and well-researched. Well-constructed essays will serve as a chapter (or portion of a chapter) in your dissertation. The final paper in this course will serve as a portion of your literature review.
There are three elements to developing this essay:
- Identifying your thesis and research question (Due January 27)
- Preparing an Outline of your essay utilizing the structure of the questions
