Public Health Policy Assignments: ( Initial paper and revision or final paper)

Objectives: Students will demonstrate the following elements:

Participate in community meetings that are focused on resource allocation issues in health and social welfare such as:
Public hearings (state or county)
Legislative committee meetings (state or county)
Public regulatory events (state or county)
Identify political influences and health policy development opportunities in health and health care focused policy and regulatory environments
Apply advocacy principles such as:
Written testimony to state or county government committees or agencies
Observe legislative deliberation involving expert witnesses
Testify at public hearings

Assignment Guidelines

Identify a public health issue that may be county wide, state, or federal.
Find a current health policy related to the public health issue identified in step 1, may be (Federal or State) that impacts or may potentially impact a community, a population or nursing practice.
A brief introduction including the legislators who authored the bill and the sponsors of the bill. Include a short history of the policy.
Explain why you think the bill has an impact.
Evaluate the pros and cons of each side of the issue.

Use 5 or more current sources, of which at least 2 are evidence based, peer-review journal articles and at least 2 are current event articles.

The paper should be 8-12 pages with (including) the title page, abstract and references. Include citations for sources/. Follow APA 7th edition.
