Discussion #3 – Into the Woods
Please read Chapter 14: American Musical Theatre in Theatre: A Way of Seeing. There are eight video clips that help to illustrate various topics within the PowerPoint. You can find the video clips in Modules under Week 4: Musical Theatre Video Clips . Please watch each video clip when prompted. Video clip examples will be bolded in red. A) The Production Response Forum: Into the Woods consists of two questions. Your post should be no less than 300 words. Make sure you address each question for full credit. You will be graded on your grammar and spelling.
- First, read the libretto and try to picture the production in your head as you read. Then, watch the production from the link provided. Compare and contrast your expectations to the production of Into the Woods. What did you imagine from the reading, and how was that different in the production version you saw? How does the dialogue and music combine to drive the musical as a whole? What element is the most important to the storytelling in THIS particular productionplot, music, or character? What can you conclude about the relations between the musical and literary components in this play? Give specific examples from the script or production to justify your points.
- How did you react to the piece on a personal level? How does Into the Woods relate to your personal experience? What is the musical trying to communicate thematically?
