Peer Reponse to 2 discussion post. Each peer response needs to be at least 150 words each and have 1 high-level scholarly reference for each response. I have included the original discussion prompt for each post.

Discussion Prompt

Identify the unique purpose of nursing that is NOT performed by any other profession.  What do nurses do that no other profession or discipline is dedicated to perform? Identify this concept and link it to a concept in any theoretical framework.

Discussion 1:

Nurses are in charge of continuous monitoring of patients in all aspects of care at least in the inpatient setting. Physicians oversee their patients, and respiratory therapy cares for the patients respiratory needs, but the nurse is at the bedside for their entire shift and in charge of catching small changes in the patients overall status in order to report them to the appropriate provider and problem solve on the spot. We oversee all of our patients treatments, therapies, medications, and procedures. For all of the specialty providers involved in care of the patient, the nurse is present and monitoring each of these specific aspects of care, and when problems arise we are the first to discover them in order to begin problem solving

Faye Abdellahs Patient Centered Theory focuses on the nurses responsibility toproblem solve in order to meet the patients needs. Nurses are to assess a patients condition in order to determine an appropriate care plan based on the acuity of the active problem. She refers to 21 problems that nurses should assess and address. These problems involve activity, oxygen supply, fluid and electrolyte balances, elimination, spiritual concerns, environment, and others (Mehraeen et al., 2020). The diversity among these problems highlights the job of a nurse to continuously monitor the patient, as a whole, in every aspect of their care, in order to properly problem solve. Nurses are unique in the detail of their care to multiple patients at a time. Throughout the patients care, the nurse is the face that the patient and their loved ones see for the greatest amount of time. This allows the nurse to know the patient better than other providers and catch on to small changes as soon as they occur and begin creating a plan for resolving any problems.

Discussion 2:

Identify a unique purpose of nursing that is not performed by another profession. This question was a little difficult because nurses play a big role in healthcare, but there are also a lot of things that nurses do that other professions can also do. I feel that nurses are the ones that are at bedside with the patients to most, not only do we make care plans, but we also implement them, monitor, report back to other departments. Delivering good healthcare is consistent with an international effort to maintain and enhance continuity of care within the entire healthcare system. It is widely believed that continuity is essential for achieving high-quality patient care (Valaker et al., 2017). For example, RT might have their plans and come give treatments, but it will be up to the nursing staff to further monitor that patients lung sounds and to order any PRN breathing treatments. Same with dietary, if the patient was having trouble with their current diet the nurses would be the one to have speech eval the patients for a potential diet change. Making nurses one of the best advocates, even though other professions advocate as well like teachers and their students.

Idea Jean Orlando emphasizes the relationship between nurses and patients, as well as the nursing professional function and meeting patients needs. Ida Jean Orlando started the nursing process that still guides nursing care today. Defined as a systematic approach to care using the fundamental principles of critical thinking, client-centered approaches to treatment, goal-oriented tasks, evidence-based practice (EDP) recommendations, and nursing intuition. Holistic and scientific postulates are integrated to provide the basis for compassionate, quality-based care (Toney-Butler, 2021). I think this is important because nurses are the ones that are always monitoring patients and catching them when they start to decline in condition. Nurses are always prioritizing what needs to be done and giving updates to everyone else in the interdisciplinary team.
