Assignment Directions:

     In an essay of 500-750 words, analyze the effects and causes of a contemporary social problem. Follow the following sequence of paragraphs:

o  P1: First, briefly identify the problem (no more than 3 sentences), and then analyze the relationships between the various negative effects the problem produces.

o  P2: Then, discuss the various causes of the problem.

o  P3: Either propose a solution to the problem, or else speculate on the meaning or likelihood of achieving of social justice.

     Some important hints and warnings:

o  This is not a position paper. You might end up taking a side in P3, but do not proceed from the beginning as if you are taking a side in a debate. The idea is to objectively assess the various causal factors involved with a social problem.

o  Select a problem that almost anyone would agree is a problem. If you select gun control as a problem, half of your audience will disagree from the start that gun laws should be considered problematic. Instead, select mass shooting. Nobody is in favor of more mass shootingseven gun rights activists. What about neglected road repair and busted axles? That count?

o  Organize your first two paragraphs with a categorization system. Try not to overlook or ignore any effects or causes, and to capture as many as you can in the space of a paragraph. To do this, you can devise a system of categories to cover more ground (Tree of Intemperance).

o  Select a problem of a size you can manage in 2 to 3 pages. Racism is too big and vast; racism in police departments is more focused and manageable. Stop and Frisk in NYC even better.

  Remember the system for classifying living species?

  KPCOFGS: aim for family-sized topics or narrower (genus, species.)

o  Discuss both chains and webs of effects and causes. Remember to follow the ripples!
