1)    Make sense of tracking (ability-grouping)from the perspective of functionalist and conflict theories, and

2)    Argue in favor of one of the perspectivesas a fairer (more accurate) representation of tracking in practice.

Guidelines:

       Avoid approaching your argument bycontrasting what you believe to be the purpose of education according tofunctionalist and conflict theorists. Instead, focus on why tracking exists,according to functionalist and conflict theorists, and which explanation offersa more accurate portrayal.

Considerusing the following organizational structure:

       Introduction

o  Convey your argument/thesis(respond to part 2) of the essay task)

       Accountfor tracking from the perspective of functionalist and conflict theories

o  In this section,describe how functionalist theorists and conflict theorists would make sense ofthe existence of tracking.

o  In this section, youshould contradict the thesis that you present in the introduction, whilereferencing ideas from course texts and class to support the counterargument.

       Body

o  This section should beas long, but usually longer, than the counterargument section. It should focuson why your thesis is more compelling than the counterargument presented.Again, you should reference ideas from course texts and class to support yourargument.

       Conclusion:  

o  This section succinctlysummarizes the main ideas from your essay and re-conveys your thesis(argument).
