You should now be familiar with the concept of social-ecological systems (SES) and have a case study inmind for your SES project. This first essay will serve as a foundation for your final SES paper. In this shortessay, you will define the structure, interactions, and resilience of your SES. I ask you to write a 5-page(double-spaced, 12pt font, 1-inch margins) essay that includes the following components:1) Introduce your SES. Where is it and why is it an interesting case study? (10 points, 1 page)2) Make a map of your SES and describe its structure (resource systems, resource units,governance, and actors) and at least 2 key interactions between the social and the ecologicalsystem components. Use the template provided to you here, or make your own hand-drawnmap. (20 points 2 pages).3) Make a resilience diagram for your SES. Describe where your SES is in the adaptive cycle and thephases the SES has been through to reach its current position (2 pages, 20 points).Note that the map and resilience diagrams do NOT count in the page count of your paper. Support youressay with at least 5 sources from journal articles, books, book chapters, or online references tosubstantiate your claims about the place youre studying, and its structure, and resilience. Two of thesesources may come from websites. Google Scholar is generally a great place to search for peer-reviewedsources. I will walk us through searching for citations in class. Within the text of your paper, useparenthetical author (year) citations to substantiate your claims within the essay. I will provide examplesin class of citation formatting within the text. Any citation style in the bibliography is fine. Just beconsistent.
