Module 6 Assignment: My Lai and the Winter Soldier Investigation
In
this module we looked at several events surrounding the coverage of the
war. My Lai had some particularly dark and gruesome images and events.
The Winter Soldier Investigation was a direct response by veterans to
this atrocity and other war crimes. As you read through, or listened to,
the accounts of the soldiers that were in Vietnam at the time think
about how these events made you feel personally.
Write
a personal reflection essay about the My Lai Massacre and the Winter
Soldier Investigation. Below are some questions and statements to help
get you started. You don’t have to address all of these, but use them to
think through what you want to write about.
- Do you feel any real change came from the investigation?
- Do you agree with the investigation, or do you think it was just a political move?
- William Calley was 25 at the time of the My Lai Massacre, and as we read, was considered one of McNamara’s Morons. In your opinion, did this have any affect on the events that played out?
- What were John Kerry and John O’Neill’s real motivations for their stances on the investigation?
Your paper should be double spaced, at least 3 pages, and use
parenthetical citations to show what source you are referring to and/or
quoting from. See the rubric for more specific information about how
points will be distributed in the grading process.
It is due by midnight CST on Sunday.
