Ariella Azoulays The Civil Contract of Photography gives us a lot to consider about the relationship between viewer and object viewed, in her case, photos of various scenes of catastrophe, not all violent, but revealing of injustice of some kind. She argues that once weve met the gaze, we enter a contract with the photo, have a responsibility at least not to forget what we see there. The examples we considered were the photos of the smiling Palestinian women and the two slave women.
In your paper, I want you to focus on the interaction between yourself, the viewer, and Waltz with Bashir and reader of Autobiography of Red. In Azoulays terms (and Foucaults, or Lacan, Sartre, p. 330) focus on the gaze, or the space that is opened up between you and the film/text, and what happens in that space. This means you will focus on how the content and effects of each work register on you, what kind of reactions you have and what conclusions they lead you to. You should consider how you feel as well as what the film or text makes you think. You might also consider questions like, Are you moved to action? Is your understanding of something deepened by your experience of the film/text? Do you feel changed by them, if so how?
You should begin your paper with a description of your approach, perhaps using some of Azoulays language or concepts, or use your own formulation of applying a response theory to the film/texts.
Cite the texts by author and page number in parenthesis and include a Bibliography. Refer to the film by describing the scene (for ex, When Ari visits his friend in Holland). Remember to introduce and comment on quotations.
