The first chapter assigned this week in The American Yawp is called “Democracy in America.” Why? Why do you think academic historians refer to this era in textbooks as “Jacksonian democracy” or “democracy in America”? How does the history of the early- to mid-1800s align with your understanding of “democracy”? And how was this history *not* lined up with your understanding of “democracy”? Explain, using at least two specific examples. Optional thoughtpiece extension, only if you have time and headspace this week: If you had to name this chapter something else, what would it be and why?
