The Tempest

For this assignment, students are asked to develop a clear, thesis-driven argument focusing on some specific aspect of The Tempest. Arguments must be supported with substantial textual evidence and effective analysis. Additionally, students are urged to use at least two secondary critical sources. These may be critical articles, book chapters, documentary videos, etc.
Requirements:
There is no length requirement, but most successful essays will probably need at least 1000 words to develop a sufficient argument. I dont count words or pages I only consider the
effectiveness of the argument. If its not a good argument, its not simply the result of incorrect length.

Think carefully about your thesis: what do you want to argue? Why? What is at stake in the argument? In other words, what would it mean for the audiences understanding of the play if your argument is successful?
Make sure the thesis is arguable. For instance, most readers will already understand that Prospero realizes the significance of forgiveness and mercy, so theres no point in arguing that. Your job is to challenge conventional thinking. What do you see in t
he play that others might not? Why is it important?Dont spend time summarizing the entire play: assume your audience has read it.
Make your argument specific. This will allow you to develop a thorough argument in a few pages. Too broad a topic will leave you struggling to identify your focus.
