Does Leader-Member Exchange Theory allow for diversity and inclusion?

In thinking about Leader-Member Exchange Theory, how can leaders maintain an inclusive and equitable environment when we unconsciously reward higher performers than those who do the bare minimum? Leaders should be careful not to exclude members of the team that may not exhibit the characteristics they are looking for. It is important to bear in mind that cultural differences, family dynamics, and experience may affect employee’s work habits, and ability to go beyond their expected job duties. How can leaders avoid favoritism and promote an equitable and diverse workplace?
