For this project you will need to pick a religious community to research and visit.
Your 1000-word essay will include:
- our class definition of religion (Catherine Albanese’s Definition which includes the Four C’s — from week one)
- its application to the religious community you picked
- your anthropological observations from your visit.
Most religious communities have a web presence from which you can locate the 4 c’s of religion. For example, the national bodies of the United Methodist Church, the Southern Baptist Church, the United Church of Christ, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all have websites. Other communities do too. Use these websites to gain your factual knowledge, use your visit to gain a more interpersonal/experiential understanding of the community.
I have included links to some religious communities located within the Panhandle of Florida for those who live in the Panhandle. If you live elsewhere, know that your community probably has many of these same religious communities in your neck of the woods. A simple google search may be all that you need. If you run into difficulties, shoot me a message and we’ll see what we can find together.
I have also included an explanation of how to conduct a religious site visit. You won’t necessarily need to do all of those things, but it should give you a good idea of how to prepare yourself for this experience.
