It’s very important that, as students, you take the time to slow down and think about your learning. As often as possible, you should try to think about the process of a task that you completed, but very intentionally – for example, how did you approach the task? Was it planned or was it haphazard (did you just…wing it?)? How did you feel as you worked through the task? Why do you think that is? When you slow down to think about your thinking (and learning) process, this is called “Metacognition.” Metacognition is an extremely important skill, yet it is also grossly underutilized. Now that you have a general idea of Metacognition, we’re going to think about our last two assignments – both of which were essays. Essays often bring up strong emotions for students. Some students may feel confident, but some may feel anxious, and avoid even doing the assignment. For this discussion, I want you to write 2 paragraphs that details the following:
- in the first paragraph, discuss how you approached doing the 1st essay (in week 3). You could talk about if you had a plan (if so, what was it), or did you feel like you had no plan? Then talk about the process you undertook as you worked through the assignment. Feel free to add anything you like, but I want you to think deeply about the process (from planning/or the lack thereof to completion). Then I want you to try and think back to any emotions that came up as you were thinking about the assignment, while you were working on the assignment, and/or when you finished the assignment.
- in the second paragraph, follow the same process as above, but this time apply it to how you approached and worked through the second essay. Were the processes the same or different? If you changed processes, did you notice a change in emotions? Are there any valuable lessons you can take from this as you move forward in your academic career or personal life?
