Directions for the Culture

1.  Read the article Feeding Student Achievement by Fighting for Food Justice by Jessica Fregni, located in the Readings folder.

2.  Watch the film Living on One Dollar located in the videos folder. The video is approximately one hour in length so give yourself sufficient time to review the film and take notes.

3.  Review the main concepts of Chapter 3 prior to completing this discussion post.  Chapter 10 may also be helpful as background information for this discussion board, but it is not required.


1.  Paragraph 1

After reading the article Feeding Student Achievement by Fighting for Food Justice by Jessica Fregni from the Teach for America website, write a paragraph explaining how food is connected to and/or represents class and culture.  Think of terms from Chapter 3 such as beliefs, values, and norms (these are just some terms and ideas but there are many more ways to discuss food, education, culture, and class status).  Some questions you might consider in forming your ideas are:

How does poverty impact food access and education of the individual, family and society over time?

How does a person’s social and economic experiences shape what they know?

2.  Paragraph 2

After watching the documentary Living on One Dollar, write a paragraph answering how being malnourished affects other aspects of material and non-material culture in the lives of the people of Peña Blanca.  Your paragraph might include (but is not limited to) a discussion of mental and physical growth, employment, prenatal care, educational achievement, and elements of global inequality.

3.  Question for Classmates  

Pose a question to your classmates.  This question should help to inspire new thoughts and ideas on the subject.  Your goal is to promote further, deeper discussion on the issues.
