How have some gangs come to be among the world’s best-known criminal organizations? According to this Univision News report, it is estimated that the Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, and its rival Barrio 18 gang together have about 40,000 members in the United States. And at least another 100,000 in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and Italy.
