Special Interest Paper (20% of final grade)
Each student will write and submit a 3.5-page paper (double spaced using APA Format) on a topic from the course that I hope you will select because it is of personal interest to you. The topic you choose must come from the course content (review the assigned text chapters for ideas). You may also draw your paper topic from lectures, but of course these correspond to the text chapters as well.
Select and read three (3) articles from peer reviewed academic journals on your topic and provide a very brief synopsis of each article as it relates to your interest. Your synopsis is not a summary of the entire journal article. Rather, only discuss those aspects of each article that you will draw from for your exploration of your topic. Contact a Leddy librarian if you do not know what a peer reviewed journal is, or how to find appropriate academic journals in psychology . Finally, describe how each article relates to your topic, and discuss the implications you see for real life. You will be graded on the basis of structure, intelligibility, quality of your arguments and insights, and the implications that you draw from your analysis of the articles you have selected.
Paper Structure and Grading Rubric
Your paper must conform to the following structure and page limits:
Define your topic and why it is of special interest to you (this is something like your Thesis Statement, but not. Its about why the topic is of interest to you) (Half a page). — 2 Marks
Describe the main points of each article that make it of relevance to your topic. Do not attempt to summarize the entire article. Only discuss those points made in the article which are of relevance to your interest in the topic one paragraph per article. (Not to exceed one page in total). Be thoughtful, yet brief. — 2 Marks X 3 articles = 6 Marks
Provide a two-page discussion of how the findings of these articles you have identified affect, reinforce, and/or change how you think, feel, and/or behave with respect to your chosen topic. — 8 Marks
APA compliance (use the most recent edition of APA and see below for more instructions in this regard) — 2 Marks
Clarity and coherence of writing (if we have to read something twice to understand it, its not clearly and coherently written) — 2 Marks
We have limited hours allocated to GA grading. Accordingly, variance from this structure will result in the loss of marks. Exceeding the page limit for this paper will result in the loss of marks. You will be penalized up to 5 marks for failing to conform to this paper structure and length, regardless of how well it might be written. Dont vary from this structure and length. Even a paper that is perfectly written, meets all the requirements as outlined above, but varies from the format and length will lose 5 marks as a penalty for varying from these instructions.
