Here’s is our second Discussion Forum.  It relates to the recent reading assignment The Shirley Letters.  What I’m looking for you to do is engage in a discussion about the sections of the Shirley Letters that teach us something about what Gold Rush California was like.  

So please give at least two examples of evidence (that is to say, two pieces of evidence total, using two different letters) that you think help us understand the broader issues at play during the Gold Rush. You might consider, violence, luck, greed, ethnic and racial diversity, racism, among other issues that I discussed in lecture or you read about in Hurtado. You don’t need to go on at excessive length, but do properly identify the particular letter you’re using, set the context for your example, and explain why it is historically important.
