Definition Essay Topics and Assignment Requirements
Following everything you have learned, read, and studied about good essay writing for this course and especially the content for the Definition Essay folder under the Lessons tab, produce a 1,000 word or so Definition Essay, selecting ONE of the following topics. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU USE SOURCES AND QUOTATIONS FROM THE LIBRARY WEB PAGE TO DOCUMENT YOUR BORROWED IDEAS. Some acceptable sources are as follows:
YOU MUSY USE sources from the library home page on the college’s web page, Credo Reference, Encyclopedia Britannica, Facts on File Writer’s Reference Center and Facts on Files Issues and Controversies, and other GALILEO or library sources. Why do I recommend the library’s sources? They are QUALITY SOURCES, and the Works Cited entry is AUTOMATICALLY given to you IF you select the MLA citation. Hence, the Works Cited page’s entries should be flawless.
Underline the thesis sentence and place it properly based on the Top-Down model for essay introductory paragraphs. Document “borrowed” information properly with both in-text citations and Works Cited entries that follow MLA documentation. See proper MLA documentation and page formatting in the MLA Folder.
Write in third person use; no first or second person use.
You will have several sources to document in this essay, and you are defining one of the terms from an abstract perspective, which means the reader should, after processing your essay, push away and say, “Wow, I never considered _(insert your term you are defining)_ from that point of view.” You will push the envelope of development and comprehension beyond the dictionary definition. You are (and I hate this overused phrase, but I am using it here) thinking outside the box. In fact, you may use a few of these development strategies as you compose
Your body paragraphs should follow this development pattern:
A, E, E—let me interpret for you. It is a memory device known as Assertion, Evidence, and Evaluation.
A=Assertion or your topic sentence. This sentence is your words that presents the idea of that paragraph. For example, if you were writing about the roller coasters at Disney World, your assertion/topic sentence might read as follows: The variety of roller coasters at Disney World are a thrill seeker’s dream world.
Next, you have Evidence (E), which would be a quote from a source or an example from a newspaper or other source with QUOTES, no paraphrases. Example: “The SteamRoller coaster at the Magic Kingdom provides three G’s worth of fun in the final plunge into a lagoon of water for the thrill-seeking rider,” (Bradley). Notice the quotation and the author in-text citation.
Third, you would have the last E, which stands for Evaluation. This step involves the writer connecting the Assertion and the Evidence for the reader’s understanding. The writer is holding the hand of the reader and may be telling what a reader may assume to be obvious. Example: Thrill-seekers looking to cool off, while upsetting their stomachs at the same time, would do well to schedule a ride on the SteamRollder coaster at the Magic Kingdom. (Again, these are your words.)
Last, you would have a concluding sentence for the paragraph, and you are done. The skeleton outline for the body paragraphs would look as follows:
Assertion
Evidence
Evaluation
Concluding sentence.
Topic selections for this term are as follows, and you are writing to only one of these:
Define a team player.
Define peer pressure.
Define a good or bad parent (take only one position, not both)
Define a couch potato.
Define a commuter college student.
Define a baseball player.
See the Blackboard Announcement for the deadline. You will submit through a Safe Assign dropbox and print me a copy, attaching the appropriate rubric. You will need several sources incorporated into your essay as you abstractly define one of these terms/concepts.
