Effective Communication Signature Skill Assignment Part 1

               For this assignment you will write part 1 of your signature skill assessment paper. If you recall, the directions for the paper begin by asking you to select four (4) things that you feel a “good” criminological theory should account for or explain, and to provide support for your position that the things you have identified are important. This will be the focus of part 1. There should be three (3) paragraphs – An introduction, the identification of the four things and why you picked them, and a paragraph where you provide support for each one. You should also begin to form your references page.

               So, what am I looking for in each of these paragraphs? First, the ability to express a complete and original thought. Second, the ability to follow directions. Third, the ability to locate and use an outside source. Fourth, the ability to properly cite outside sources. The following is a breakdown each paragraph.

               Intro- define what crime theory is, what it is used for, and why we care about it (ok you personally may not care one bit but humor me).

               The four things- here name each of the four (4) things you feel a theory should cover, and why you selected them. Be specific- don’t say “drugs – because they’re bad”. Do you have a particular reason for selecting them? Please note that I am NOT asking anyone to divulge anything about their personal life of something terrible they have experienced. In fact, if that is the case, I would ask you select something else, unless you really feel comfortable discussing it. The LAST thing I want to do is make a student feel re-victimized by retelling a painful experience for the sake of an assignment.

               Your outside support- here is where you would explain to the reader (yes, it is just me, but again humor me) that it is not just your opinion that these things need to be accounted for or explained. This is the support for your argument. This support should be in the form of government reports, academic journals, or academic books. In some cases, a website dedicated to a particular issue may be acceptable, but even those get their numbers from somewhere- and you need to make sure they are using a reliable source. Remember, I have posted a video showing how to use google scholar, and Bureau of Justice Statistics and Crimesolutions.gov are reliable places to find out just how prevalent a certain crime is.

               Reference page- put the cites in alphabetical order by first author. I will not be particularly picky about this in the early stages, but I will check to make sure that you have all the information for your sources so all you will have to do late is make sure they are properly formatted.
