Midterm Course Reflection

While the Midterm Exam is designed to assess your understanding of foundational historical content provided in this course, the goal of this Midterm Course Reflection is to provide you with an opportunity to process what you’ve learned and demonstrate your ability to “think” like a historian.

There are two questions below that ask you to reflect on course themes and discuss your understanding of change over time.  You must answer BOTH questions. Here are the expectations for each individual response:

  • At least 300 words (and no more than 500 words)
  • Organized chronologically (since that is the best way to show change over time)
  • Directly articulate change over time and incorporate historical analysis
  • Include specific historical examples as evidence (at least two examples)
  • Clearly written and edited for grammar and spelling.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How did attitudes about citizenship and what defined “American” identity change from the 1870s to the 1930s? How did the United States treatment of immigrants and marginalized communities shift over time?
  2. How did the role of government change in the United States from the 1870s to the 1930s? Did government become more or less involved in the lives of Americans?

Please submit your reflections through the assignment link, and please be aware that your responses will be submitted through Turnitin plagiarism checking. Also, please be sure to submit all your responses at once – you cannot submit multiple times.

Remember, all student responses in this course must be original – written by you, and for this particular assignment. If you quote other sources, you should provide correct citations. Please review the Academic Honesty policies for the course if you have any questions, or reach out to me via Canvas message. Plagiarism in this course will not be tolerated and there will be consequences!
