The cause of the Great War most commonly known as World War I has multiple reasons that factor into the triggering of World War 1. To start, I would say the main reason World War 1 began was due to the Black Hand. The Black Hand was a secret military-like society formed in 1901 and created by Serbian officers in the Army of the Kingdom of Serbia. This society was filled with many radicals as well as army officers, mercenaries, and government officials. This secret military-like society the Black Hand had radical ideas for change and this terrorist group would go as far as to commit violence and carry out assassinations to achieve their goal. Their goal was to create a Greater Serbia. The Black Hand Terrorist group trained their member’s tactics to carry out political murders/assassinations. One of the political figures they assassinated that sparked tension to start a World War was the Archduke of Australia-Hungary Franz Ferdinand. Franz Ferdinand was set to appear in Sarajevo in June 1914; however, the Black Hand plotted to assassinate the Archduke because of his perceived threat to Serbian independence. Their plan had succeeded. That spark led to Australia-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. After this declaration of war, alliances would have already been formed. Some would say the Alliance system started the World War because without it the war would have been smaller and countries would not have had to aid their allies. The alliances were the Entente Powers against the Central Powers. The Entente Powers had the countries France, Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States. The Central Powers had Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria. By the end of World War I, the stability of Europe had been broken. The centuries-old monarchies and empires of Europe would come to an end due to the alliance structure during World War I and also the European borders would become reorganized. This led to the rise of a new superpower the United States. I would say the first world war was the beginning and end of a historical era in International Relations. It is the end because those alliances are over but it was the beginning because new alliances have been formed.”
