Students will write an analytic research paper for this course. This assignment asks you to
demonstrate understanding of the theoretical framework of economic sociology by
applying it to a new case in an independent research project. In 8-10 pages (double-
spaced), you will be asked to select and analyze an economic phenomenon of your
choice. The paper should draw from lecture material, course readings, and at least five
additional academic sources to support your analysis.

The purpose of the paper topic assignment is very simple: the goals are to get students thinking about their final papers early in the semester and to double-check that all students understand what the final research paper assignment is asking them to do. In evaluating your paper topic assignments, we will be looking for three things, and three things only:

1. Did you describe the economic phenomenon you propose to analyze in your research paper? Is what you describe actually an economic phenomenon (e.g. somehow related to the production, distribution, or consumption of goods and services, broadly defined – see paper assignment sheet)? 
2. Did you briefly summarize your main argument about which theoretical perspective offers the best explanation of this phenomenon? The major perspectives covered in this course are: (1) the economistic/rational choice perspective, (2) the structuralist perspective, and (3) the culturalist perspective. Don’t worry if you haven’t decided on your argument yet—you can always change your mind, just write something down for now. What we are looking for is an explicit statement about your main argument (e.g. “I will argue that a structuralist perspective offers the best explanation of this phenomenon…) just to confirm that you understand what the final research paper assignment is asking you to do.  
3. Did you provide a list of five academic references (for the purpose of this topic proposal assignment, this reference list can include a mix of both relevant course readings and external academic sources—you just need to list five academic references, period). However, please note that for the final draft of the research paper that you will submit next month, you will need to include five external academic sources in addition to any relevant course readings.

   If you have included a brief description of your economic phenomenon, a brief summary of your main argument, and a list of five references, you have completed the assignment: you will receive full (100%) credit.
