Students should choose an issue that is impacting LGBTQ families.  Through the use of the media including movies, television shows or documentaries that include family as its primary focus, students will reflect on the issue.  Examples of appropriate media will be discussed in class.  In all cases, the selected media must be approved by the course instructor.LGBTQ families portrayed in the media should be described and analyzed utilizing appropriate course material drawn from lectures and assigned reading. Students may also use outside sources to supplement their analysis if they so desire.

What Your Paper Should Include:

The paper should begin with a general description of the media and a summary of the storyline as it relates to the diversity of LGBTQ families. This description should be approximately one page in length. The remainder of the paper should be dedicated to describing issues the family faces and patterns of functioning in relation to material included in the course (textbook/course readings, scholarly research journals and/or class sessions). Examples should be drawn from the media and addressed using appropriate family-based theories covered in class or observations. While the description of the family is important for context, your grade will be based primarily on the degree to which you incorporate appropriate family theory and research discussed in class and outside scholarly research in your interpretation of diverse LGBTQ family.

Interpretation of the LGBTQ families should include the application of at least one of the “family theories” please use the ecological systems theory. 

Key concepts of the chosen theory should be applied to a discussion of the LGBTQ family. Beyond the theories, it is expected that students will also utilize areas of information from class lectures and/ or class readings to discuss aspects lof the family portrayed in the media.  It is expected that students will also incorporate from the course readings and outside scholarly research proposed solutions on how to better serve families similar to the family they have identified in the media.

The LGBTQ family issues paper should be five pages in length. If references other than the course readings or class notes are used, these should be included in a reference section on a separate page at the end of the paper utilizing the APA 7th Edition style.
