Katie’s mom became more depressed when her boyfriend left six months ago. Katie reacts to her mother’s neglect by misbehaving in school. Katie pushes the kids when she gets frustrated and does not complete her work. Katie is a smart girl but too distracted to do well. Katie throws pencils at other kids and kicks kids during recess. She pushes kids during gym class and becomes very angry when kids make fun of her dirty, old clothes. Her mother often forgets parent meetings and does not do homework with Katie after school. However, Katie’s grandmother adores Katie and visits her on Sundays to go to church together. Her grandmother is a source of strength for Katie. She has asked Katie’s mom numerous times to let Katie live with her. Katie’s mom refuses to do this and does not want to get help. Katie’s teacher, Mrs. Woods, is patient and caring towards Katie. Mrs. Woods spends after class tutoring Katie and is working with the grandmother to help Katie to be more successful in school.
