Option 1: Eliminate meat and/or dairy for 14 days.

For this project, you will go vegan (or vegetarian) for 14 days, track your eating for these 14 days, and reflect on the experience at 3 times (see What you will submit).

Note:

  • If you are already vegan, you should choose a different topic.
  • You should make every effort to adhere to your commitment to eliminate meat/dairy but you will not be penalized if you are not 100% successful. If this happens, reflect in writing what the circumstances were and why you didn’t or weren’t able to adhere to the experiment.

What you will submit:

  • Food log: Your 14 days of journaling that documents what you ate each day. Each entry must be dated.
  • Reflection 1: Before you begin this activity, reflect on your relationship to meat and/or dairy. How frequently do you consume meat/dairy? How much to you enjoy it? What do you know about the animal(s) you consume? How do you feel about embarking on this meat/dairy-less experiment? What challenges do you anticipate? This entry should be about 100 words.
  • Reflection 2: About halfway into the exercise (e.g., around Days 6-9), write a reflection in which you discuss how this experience is going. How easy/difficult has it been? Have you encountered any difficulties and if so, how have you dealt with these? Your reflection should be about 100 words and must be dated.
  • Reflection 3: Toward the end (e.g., Days 12-14), write a reflection on how this experience has been. How easy/difficult has it been? Have you encountered any difficulties and if so, how have you dealt with these? Your reflection should be about 100 words and must be dated.
  • Final Paper: After completing the 14 days, write a paper (~350 words) that addresses each of the following:
    • How did you feel before, during, and after the activity? (It is fine to refer back to your reflections to support your claims.)
    • Did this exercise have any effect on your health?
    • What have you noticed or learned about yourself or the culture we live in?
    • What did you like about this activity?
    • What did you find challenging?
    • Will you alter your meat/dairy consumption in the future? Why or why not?

Option 2: Exploring your love and hate toward certain animals.

For this project, you will research and reflect on two species – your favorite animal and your least favorite animal. You will research both species and identify “fun/fascinating facts,” explore representations of both animals in popular culture, and reflect on your own attitudes toward these animals (see What you will submit).

Note:

  • Biologically speaking, it may be most helpful to focus on a species (rather than family or genus). For example, if your favorite animal is Ailuropoda melanoleuca (aka the panda bear), research the panda bear, not the family Ursidae (bear) or genus (Ailuropoda). But if your favorite animal is Leporidae (or rabbit), it is fine to research the family.
  • Unlike our favorite animals, our least favorite animal is often viewed as having little individuality. For example, we may dislike “cockroaches,” not realizing that there are 4600 species of cockroaches (fun fact!). Again, it’s fine to focus on the family or genus, rather than an individual species, but these differences in perception and naming may be worth reflecting on.

What you will submit:

  • Pre-reflection: Before you start this project, reflect on your favorite and least favorite animal species. Why did you choose these? What are your feelings toward these animals? Why do you think you have these attitudes (keep in mind, attitudes toward other animals are socially constructed)? What has your relationship to these animals been in the past? Has this animal species had any effect on your health (mental, physical, spiritual) that you are aware of? Your reflection should be ~250 words.
  • Summary of what you learned about each animal. Include at least 10 “facts” about each species. You must use in-text citations for your sources for all facts! This section may be presented as bullet points.
  • Documentation from popular culture: Document and reflect on how both species are represented in popular culture (e.g., as mascots, as stuffed animals, in advertising, religious texts, books, movies, etc.). Provide at least 3 visual or written excerpts for both species. Document your sources and assign proper credit to any visual images you include! Reflect on how positive or negative these representations are and what effect this has on people’s attitudes toward these animals. This section should be approximately 200 words.
  • Final reflection: What have you learned about these species that you did not know going in this project? Have your attitudes toward them changed at all? This reflection should be approximately 200 words.
  • References: Provide a reference list of all sources consulted. APA, ASA or MLA formatting is acceptable.
