Each student will choose two Icons of Culture two of the examples I included in the
lectures (Weeks 1-6) to compare and contrast. The choices must be from different topics (for
example, one can be a Wonder of the World and the other from Judaism; one can be a painting
of the Virgin Mary and the other can be a sculpture of the Buddha).
Dont choose a topic you have written about and / or presented on.
Using Academic sources (not Wikipedia and / or blogs) research your chosen religions. TWO
academic sources are required for EACH Icon (print and online sources). The sources will
enable students to provide a brief summary of each Icon (lecture notes are handy sources).
WHAT IN TO INCLUDE IN YOUR ESSAY:
Be sure to identify the Icon: artist (if known), title, medium, date, and civilization or
religion that created it. Include the location. Is the object in sit (original placement)?
This information can be included in an introductory paragraph.
What is the Icon? A sculpture? A church? A temple? (For this assignment, people are
not to be chosen).
Describe each Icon in your own words.
Compare and Contrast THREE relevant points. These can include: how it is used? What
does it mean? Think about what it says about the civilization OR religion who made it.
The body of your essay should be devoted to a relevant and revealing comparison and
contrast of both Icons. NOT just a regurgitation of information you read in a source.
Dont forget a concluding paragraph!
GUIDELINES:
All Essays must be in the MLA Format.
All Essays should be a MINIMUM 3 pages NOT including separate pages for images
and a Works Cited Page.
DO NOT copy and paste images within the text of your Essay.
Proper citations are required and expected. Avoid plagiarism.
Synthesize and summarize your research in your own words.
DONT simply use quoted information in your essay just because it is in a source! Make
sure you understand it.
To cut and paste from any source / to not cite someone elses words is plagiarism. Any
