In need of an outline.

The questions I am asking for my research paper are, “What policies did Huey P. Long implement to aid in the betterment of Louisianians?” and “How did Huey P. Long’s policies help or harm Louisianians through the Great Depression?”

I will provide an annotated bibliography to help with the outline.

The following is feedback from my professor:

You are addressing an important topic and one that surprisingly has not been sufficiently addressed by historians who have tended to focus more on the political career of Huey Long than on the impact and consequences of the Great Depression in Louisiana. With that said, there are significant sources to consult.

I encourage you to focus your topic more narrowly on Louisiana and review pertinent sections of a Louisiana History textbook to get a sense of the consensus among scholars about the period.

For instance, from what I know, Louisiana was already experiencing a significant economic downturn before the stock market collapse of 1929 due to an international bust in cotton commodities prices. You may want to consider how the Great Depression impacted the various traditional areas of Louisiana’s economy, such as cotton and sugar production, lumber, and trade through NOLA, or how it impacted newly developing ones such as oil and gas.

Long was elected governor in 1928. What policies had he initiated before the crash, and what did he do after the crash as the economy worsened in the early 1930s?

White voters in Louisiana (like all southerners at the time voted for candidates from the Democratic party). Did political alignments change significantly? What were the different factions within the party in Louisiana, and how did they seek to respond to the crisis?
