Assignment #2
Psychology 111 060
Winter 2022
Schreier/Bonanni/Guzman/Richardson/Ross
Assignment #2 asks you to apply course concepts to the video The Man with the Seven Second
Memory that can be found on Canvas, as well as the additional clips about Clive Wearing
provided at the end of the memory lecture (see Lecture Recordings). You should only use
information provided in the videos, lecture, and the Schacter text to complete this assignment.
Answers should follow the order the questions are presented and be formatted as one essay. An
assignment rubric will be posted on Canvas. Students should review both the assignment and
the rubric when completing this assignment. Sources should be cited in APA format within the
body of the paper, and an APA style reference page must also be included. The citation
guidelines are posted on Canvas. The complete assignment (not including the reference page)
should be 4–5 pages double–spaced, using 12–point Times New Roman font. Assignment #2 is
due February 24th at 11:59 pm and this assignment is worth 25 points.
1. Throughout the semester we have focused on issues of ethics such as respect for persons,
beneficence, and justice. Given Clive’s memory challenges, do you believe he is able to provide
informed consent to be part of this documentary series highlighting his disorder and care? Please
use specific elements about APA ethics as well as information from the documentary, including
Clive’s discussions with Deborah about the filming, that led you to your opinion. 4 points
2. Clive’s wife, Deborah, states that Clive “knows about things… He knows that we are married
but does not remember the wedding.” What specific type of explicit memory ability and explicit
memory deficit does this demonstrate? Provide a different example from each of these explicit
memory domains that illustrate Clive’s abilities or challenges in each of these areas. 6 points
3. Briefly summarize the findings of the role of brain structure and function in implicit learning
and procedural memories for patients with amnesia that are described by Schacter in the Memory
Chapter (p.236) and the Learning Chapter (p.301). Discuss how Clive’s abilities are either
consistent or inconsistent with what is discussed in Schacter, making sure to use a specific
example for each (structure and function) evident in the movie and clips in class to support your
assertion. 7 points
4. a. The documentary and clips we watched in class emphasized the intense feelings of loss and
emotional challenges that Clive’s family experienced due to his amnesia. One concept Schacter
describes is that of emotion regulation (p.331). He notes that people use behavioral strategies in
response to situations that evoke intense emotions. Define emotion regulation. What is one
behavioral response you see illustrated in the documentary that illustrates an attempt at emotion
regulation?
b. A second concept Schacter describes is the cognitive strategy of reappraisal (p.331) as a form
of emotion regulation. Define reappraisal. What are two observations from the documentary or
clips that might be helpful for Deborah or Clive’s children to consider as a form of reappraisal as
they attempt to deal with their emotions and find purpose and meaning in Clive’s life? 8 points
