In this exercise, you will think over Oedipus the King.
Then you will make one claim about either individual characters, plot events or your interpretation of the work.
It should not be too vague or broad or general; it should be specific and narrow in focus. After all, you only have a sentence or two to make your case.
You will construct your claim sentence.
Next you will prove your claim using evidence from the text in three ways:
- The first paragraph will begin with your claim sentence and then provide
quoted material, that is, the exact words a character says in the play, as evidence.
- The second paragraph will begin with your claim sentence and then provide paraphrased material, that is, the words of the characters or chorus restated in your own words.
- The third paragraph will begin with your claim sentence and then provide evidence through plot summary.
Now end each of these paragraphs by writing a sentence or two that shows how your evidence supports your claim. In other words, make the connection for the reader that you see in your mind between your claim and the evidence either the direct quotation, the paraphrased material or the plot summary and the point you are trying to make.
Each paragraph will probably be in the neighborhood of five to ten sentences. Please double space and use finish writing, not free writing.
Make a claim that is interesting to you. You have no one to blame but yourself if this exercise bores you.
